Lucas DD Summer Playgroups Begin Monday!

Join Lucas DD's Early Intervention team for some exciting and inclusive playgroups this summer! Ideal for those up to age 6, but ALL are welcome to attend these free events. Participants need not be served by the Board. We ask the families register for the library playgroup on July 9 and the Walbridge event on August 14 (link to come) so we can adequately prepare. Please reach out to Teresa Miller with any questions or concerns.

SALUTE Monthly Meeting Monday

SALUTE, Lucas DD's self-advocacy group, will meet at 5:30 p.m. June 9. The group is pleased to welcome Ohio Representative Michele Grim as the meeting's featured speaker. Rep. Grim was previously on Toledo City Council, and her talk will focus on medical debt relief and access to health care.

 

Common Ground on Tuesday, June 10 will be at Centennial Terrace

Lucas DD's Common Ground and Friend Network is for people 18+ to gather and build lasting friendships and connections. PLEASE NOTE: The meeting will NOT be at the usual time and place. Rec Jam on June 10

Don't miss your chance to dance the night away with the cool crowd at Lucas DD's Rec Jam! This free event, for ages 18+, is from 7 - 9 p.m. June 10 at Centennial Terrace in Sylvania. Refreshments available for purchase. No registration required! Please note: Lucas DD does not provide supervision.

 

Special Olympics Pep Rally Next Friday Morning!

Come one, come all! Bring your pom-poms or just your cheering voice and head over to Larc Lane at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, June 13! Join us as we send the Lucas County Special Olympics athletes off to Columbus to compete for state championships in their respective sports. We want as many people as possible to cheer on the athletes to get them pumped up for their big weekend!

 

Lucas DD Public Vehicle Auction

Lucas DD is hosting a public auction of 5 vehicles in its current fleet. The event will take place at 10 a.m. on June 14 at Lucas DD's headquarters on Larc Lane in South Toledo.

Up for auction are two 2015 Ford Escape crossover SUVs, two 2006 F-350 vans, and a 2008 F-250 pickup truck with a Boss Super-Duty snowplow.

Larc Lane Conversations Podcast

Episode 3 of Larc Lane Conversations Podcast is now live. The hosts reflect on Mother's Day traditions, and interview Lucas DD SSA Coordinator Jason McAllister about his work with local law enforcement on behalf of individuals served by the Board. LCSO athletes received an updated newsletter this morning explaining that registration has been extended to June 22! Little Lightning athletes can register, too, for softball skills! Click here to see the updated newsletter.

 

New Training Release: Networking to Improve Employment Outcomes

Now available on DODD MyLearning, Pathways to Employment: Supporting People with Criminal Records and Developmental Disabilities explores how criminal records can create additional barriers for people with developmental disabilities and shares strategies to help them overcome these obstacles. The training provides tools to navigate legal challenges, connect with employers, and support people in finding meaningful and stable employment.

 

Apple Making Film About Disability Rights Activist

Apple Original Films has a feature film in the works centered around Judy Heumann. Judy was a prominent activist known as the “mother of the disability rights movement," and was instrumental in fighting for civil rights protections for people with disabilities.

 

Board Closed June 19

Lucas DD offices will be closed Thursday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Though our offices are closed, we are still here to support you. For emergency assistance, or to report a MUI, please contact the On-Call Service & Support Specialist at 419-380-5100.

 

Ohio Tax Holiday Dates Announced

Ohio’s 2025 expanded sales tax holiday will be held Aug. 1-14. During the holiday, tax exemption will apply to all sales of goods that are $500 or less with certain exceptions. Click here for more details.

Sounds of Sunshine is tonight

Join Sunshine Communities as the Skittle Bots take the stage from 6-8 p.m. tonight for a free summer concert filled with the covers you love to sing along to. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and favorite people. With local food trucks and room to unwind, it’s your chance to kick back, listen, and let the music take you back.

 

Wood County Board of DD Tech Open House Tuesday

Wood County Board of DD is having an open house at their Twin Tech 2.0 technology demonstration home. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on June 10. Shuttles will run continuously from the Wood County Board of DD offices to the home throughout the event.

 

Spectrum of Possibilities on Wednesday

Avenues for Autism, Lourdes University, and Destination Toledo are joining together for the Spectrum of Possibilities 2025 Autism Conference! From 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 11, the transformative day features keynote speaker Dr. Kerry Magro discussing how he navigated and overcame challenges as an individual on the autism spectrum. Explore breakout sessions led by various experts covering diverse topics from Navigating the Noise, Breaking Barriers, and Promoting Sexual Health Education.

Disabled Women Make History (and Art): Virtual Event June 20

Disabled Women Make History (and Art) is more than an art show—it’s a celebration of disability history, community, and creativity. ​Since June 2022, Disability EmpowHer Network in partnership with the Toledo Museum of Art, has presented Disabled Women Make History (and Art), an annual art show featuring the artwork of women with disabilities. Join them at 7 p.m. on June 20 for a virtual event!

Lucas County Benefit Bridge Program

The Lucas County Benefit Bridge program is designed to help individuals and families, who experience a reduction or loss of SNAP benefits due to wage increases, continue their path to self-sufficiency. This 18-month program is intended to support stability needed to maintain employment, gain skills needed to move into higher paying positions and become self-sufficient. If you would like to be considered for the program, click here to complete the form.

BACKGROUND CHECKS: All you want to know and more! 

Join us at 9 a.m. on June 10 in the Larc Lane Training Center for this free training for provider administrators and HR representatives. Participants will learn what background and registry checks are required by the Ohio Administrative Code (5123:2-2-02) and timeframes for completing these checks for new and existing employees. In addition, sample background/registry check results will be reviewed and compared to the rule to determine eligibility to work and how to determine the length of the exclusion, including in cases where there are multiple offenses. To register, email drussell@lucasdd.org.
