SALUTE Storytellers Volume 5 begins Monday

SALUTE Storytellers is for self-advocates that want to work on developing and telling meaningful stories about themselves. The weekly workshop starts Monday and ends with a live storytelling event at the Toledo Museum of Art on July 12. Individuals do not have to be from Lucas County to join. Additionally, at the live event, artwork by individuals will be featured! If you are interested in Storytellers or showcasing your artwork, please contact Deetra Kelly.

 

Join Lucas DD in the Old West End Parade!

Sign up now to join Lucas DD in the King Wamba parade as part of the Old West End Festival! Be a part of the eclectic convergence of art, music, street theater, and visual wonder that parades through the Old West End on June 7. Please note: The parade route is 1.8 miles long and Lucas DD staff will not be providing direct supervision to individuals. Make arrangements if supervision is necessary.

 

Lucas DD Summer Playgroups Begin June 9

Join Lucas DD's Early Intervention team for some exciting and inclusive playgroups this summer! Ideal for ages 0-6, but ALL are welcome to attend these free events, so invite friends and family! Participants need not be served by the Board. We ask the families register for the library playgroup on July 9 and the Walbridge event on August 14 (link to come) so we can adequately prepare. SALUTE Monthly Meeting June 9

SALUTE, Lucas DD's self-advocacy group, will meet at 5:30 p.m. June 9. The group is pleased to welcome Ohio Representative Michele Grim as the meeting's featured speaker. Rep. Grim was previously on Toledo City Council, and her talk will focus on medical debt relief and access to health care.

 

Common Ground on June 10 will be at Centennial Terrace

Lucas DD's Common Ground and Friend Network is for people 18+ to gather and build lasting friendships and connections. PLEASE NOTE: the meeting will not be at the usual time and place. Individuals are encouraged to attend the Rec Jam instead. If you have any questions, please click here to email Deborah Tyree.

 

Rec Jam on June 10

Don't miss your chance to dance the night away with the cool crowd at Lucas DD's Rec Jam! This free event, for ages 18+, is from 7 - 9 p.m. June 10 at Centennial Terrace in Sylvania. Refreshments available for purchase. No registration required! Please note: Lucas DD does not provide supervision.

Sign up for the 2025 Monroe Victory Day event! 

This is a free event, open to those aged 10-26 with a disability that want to have an amazing football experience! Each participant will receive a jersey, medal, lunch, and more. Must register, space is limited!

 

The Center for Disability Empowerment Writing Contest

In honor of the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July, The Center for Disability Empowerment is holding a writing competition. Share your voice and reflect on how the ADA has impacted the disability community. Selected writers will present their work on July 11 in Columbus and could win cash prizes! Open to youth aged 14-23 and adults aged 24+. Submissions should be sent as a Word document attached to an email. ASL submissions may be included as a YouTube link. Questions and/or submissions should be sent to hello@austindunn.net. Deadline is Monday.

 

Board Closed June 19

Lucas DD offices will be closed June 19 in observance of Juneteenth. Though our offices are closed, we are still here to support you. For emergency assistance, or to report a MUI, please contact the On-Call Service & Support Specialist at 419-380-5100.

Together We Move on Sunday

The Ability Center is hosting the inaugural FREE, inclusive event, Together We Move! Everyone is invited at 10 a.m. on June 1. After hearing motivational speaker Jacob Pacheco, attendees are invited to walk, roll, bike, or dance—move in their own way—along a 2-mile path at Glass City Metropark. In addition, there will be a dance party, and other interactive activities. This event is for individuals with and without disabilities.

Looking to strengthen connections and plan a brighter future for your loved one? Join the Family Resource Network of Ohio's Building Personal Networks of Support series that begins June 2!

Join Bittersweet Farms for their annual event, Celebrating Possibilities, 6-9 p.m. June 5.

 

2025 ADA Seminar

Join The Ability Center for their annual ADA Seminar, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 6. This year’s theme, “Envisioning the Future of Community Integration,” invites everyone to think boldly about what an inclusive society can and should look like. Registration required.

 

Sounds of Sunshine on June 6

Join Sunshine Communities as the Skittle Bots take the stage from 6-8 p.m. June 6 for a free summer concert filled with the covers you love to sing along to. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and favorite people. With local food trucks and room to unwind, it’s your chance to kick back, listen, and let the music take you back.

 

Wood County Board of DD Tech Open House June 10

Wood County Board of DD is having an Open House at their Twin Tech 2.0 technology demonstration home. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on June 10. Shuttles will run continuously from the Wood County Board of DD offices to the home throughout the open house.

Lucas County Benefit Bridge Program

The Lucas County Benefit Bridge program is designed to help individuals and families, who experience a reduction or loss of SNAP benefits due to wage increases, continue their path to self-sufficiency. This 18-month program is intended to support stability needed to maintain employment, gain skills needed to move into higher paying positions and become self-sufficient. If you would like to be considered for the program, click here to complete the form.

Offering safety, comfort, convenience and inclusion, the changing station provides an adult-size height-adjustable changing table, an electric-powered mobile lift, running water, electricity, and more. BACKGROUND CHECKS: All you want to know and more! 

Join us at 9 a.m. on June 10 in the Larc Lane Training Center for this free training for provider administrators and HR representatives. Participants will learn what background and registry checks are required by the Ohio Administrative Code (5123:2-2-02) and timeframes for completing these checks for new and existing employees. In addition, sample background/registry check results will be reviewed and compared to the rule to determine eligibility to work and how to determine the length of the exclusion, including in cases where there are multiple offenses. To register, email drussell@lucasdd.org.

Bittersweet Farms is looking for partner businesses to support their new group employment program launching this summer. Special Olympics State Summer Games Needs Volunteers

Special Olympics Ohio will be hosting the 2025 Summer Games June 13-15 in Columbus. There are many volunteer opportunities available! Everyone will be given a volunteer t-shirt and anyone who signs up for a full day will have lunch provided. 

 

Community Build Volunteers Needed

The Stranahan Elementary School PTA is seeking volunteers of various skill levels to help with the build of its inclusive and accessible playground in Sylvania. Click the link for dates and details.
