Sensory Friendly Weekend: NMGL

Explore the National Museum of the Great Lakes in a calm, accommodating setting during their Sensory Friendly Weekends. These days, on the second weekend of each month, are tailored for your family’s comfort and enjoyment.

🗓️ Saturdays from 9 – 10 am and Sundays from 11 am – 12 pm

🎫 Included with museum admission. Free for members and Museums for All participants.

Created especially for people who have sensory sensitivities, this dedicated time allows for a truly immersive and comfortable visit.

  • Crowds are limited, ensuring a peaceful and relaxed environment.
  • Our dimmed lighting creates a calming ambiance.
  • Exhibit sounds are lowered or even eliminated, reducing auditory stimulation.

They understand the importance of providing inclusive experiences for all visitors. That’s why they are proud to be a Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) by the prestigious International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Services (IBCCES). This recognition reflects their commitment to understanding and supporting individuals with autism and other sensory sensitivities. Also, an accessibility cart is available for guests who need extra support when they visit.

As part of their commitment to accessibility and inclusion, the National Museum of the Great Lakes participates in Museums for All, a national program that helps reduce financial barriers to museum visits. Families receiving SNAP benefits can receive free admission for up to four people by presenting a valid SNAP EBT card and photo ID at the front desk. This offer includes access to all museum exhibits and our historic museum ships during their open season.
