SALUTE Meeting on Monday

SALUTE, a self-advocacy group for those served by the Lucas DD, will meet at 5:30 p.m. on July 8 at 1155 Larc Lane (Door O). The guest speaker is Becca Monteleone, Assistant Professor, Disability Studies at UT. Attendees will get a sneak-peek preview of the storyteller performances, as well as a chance to ask questions and learn how the stories were developed. Common Ground Social Group (18+) on Tuesday

Lucas DD's Common Ground and Friend Network is for people 18+ to gather together and build lasting, sustainable friendships and connections. The next meeting is a summer picnic on Tuesday, July 9 from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. at our Larc Lane campus Training Center! Questions? The next EI Summer Playgroup is Wednesday!

Lucas DD's Early Intervention team welcomes everyone to the remaining inclusive Summer Playgroups. Playgroups are ideal for those up to 6 years old, but ALL ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Parents are encouraged to connect as well. Register and check-in with staff upon arrival for a chance to win fun prizes! Remaining dates, from 10 a.m. to noon are:

 

SALUTE Storytellers Are Live July 13!

SALUTE Storytellers return to the Toledo Museum of Art Glass Pavilion for an afternoon of storytelling and art, followed by a reception with ligh refreshments. SALUTE Storytellers is a collaboration between the Toledo Museum of Art, Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities, and the University of Toledo Disability Studies Program. It celebrates July as Disability Pride Month through live stories and art displays from self-advocates with disabilities.

 

Free Rock Climbing on July 16 (New Climbers Only)

Lucas County Special Olympics has partnered with Adventus Climbing for another rock-climbing clinic! If you have a special needs diagnosis and have not climbed with us before, then you are invited to join us for a FREE rock-climbing session from 6 - 7:30 p.m. on July 16. Family Ties Support Group July 18

Did you know Lucas DD has a new Parent Support Group this year called Family Ties? The goal of Family Ties is to help families make connections and build a network that they can lean on for support. This month the group will meet from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on July 18. Project STIR is coming to Toledo!

Project STIR is a training program for self-advocates designed to provide people with disabilities with the tools to advocate for themselves, work with others in advocacy and gain leadership experiences. This is a FREE training that takes place August 7 - 9 in Toledo. Registrants must attend all 3 days. 

 

Supervision is not included; it is recommended that individuals attend with an ally. Registration required; space is limited. Once registration has closed, all details will be forwarded to the participants.

 

 

 

Highlights from Lucas DD's June Board Meeting

At its June meeting, the Board of Directors of the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities gave a Special Recognition award to Bon Secours Mercy Health for its help with the Board's Inclusion Resource Fair. SALUTE Seeks Artists for Disability Pride Event in July

In conjunction with the SALUTE Storytellers event, SALUTE is looking for artists with disabilities who would like to display and tell stories about their art. This event will be on Saturday, July 13. Artists cannot sell their items on site but can provide their contact information if people are interested in purchasing later. Questions? Disability Inclusion Webinar Schedule Released

Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) recently announced the second half of its 2024 webinar series to help employers support disability inclusion in the workplace. The webinars align with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine's Executive Order 2019-03D, establishing Ohio as a Disability Inclusion State and Model Employer of Individuals with Disabilities. The monthly webinars correspond with OOD's Inclusive Employer Toolkit and the Governor's Inclusive Employer Award criteria, providing practical steps and strategies for creating inclusive workplaces.

 

Social Security to Simplify Disability Evaluation Process

In response to President Biden’s Executive Order on Transforming Federal Customer Experience and Service Delivery to Rebuild Trust in Government, the Social Security Administration is proud to announce changes that will reduce administrative burdens for applicants and help more people with disabilities receive government benefits and services if they are eligible. On April 18, 2024, Social Security published a final rule, “Intermediate Improvement to the Disability Adjudication Process, Including How We Consider Past Work.”

 

EVV UPDATE-Consent Required for GPS 

In accordance with OAC rule 5160-32-02, effective July 1, Global Positioning System (GPS) functionality of any application or device may be used only upon obtaining the signed consent of the individual receiving the service. Agency/Independent/Self-Directed providers are responsible for obtaining and maintaining consent in the individual’s service record. Consent will be effective from the date of recipient’s signature on the consent form for a period of one year (365 days). An individual who has provided consent for GPS functionality may revoke that consent at any time. Ohio Medicaid is providing a GPS Consent Form as an option for providers. Although use of the ODM form is not required, it is highly recommended. Visit the ODM webpage for EVV instructions, resources and FAQs. You can also contact Lucas DD's Provider Support for assistance. 

 

 

 

Disabled and Proud Festival tomorrow

The 2024 Disabled and Proud Fest Outdoor Expo welcomes those of all abilities to celebrate the disability experience in Toledo! Explore the Metroparks' inclusive outdoor activities in an all-day event with food trucks, an all-abilities 3 vs. 3 wheelchair basketball tournament, and more! The event takes place on July 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Swan Creek Metropark.

 

First Steps with DSAGT

Do you have a little one with Down syndrome at home? Come join the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo for their July First Steps Baby & Toddler Group! On July 14 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. there will be a cookout and some water toy fun! This program is designed as both an educational and social opportunity for parents with babies and toddlers who have Down syndrome. Please rsvp so they can have a good food count!

 

ADA 34th Anniversary Update

The Great Lakes ADA Center invites you to mark the 34th Anniversary of the ADA by joining a zoom session with representatives from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) who will provide an update on their litigation, technical assistance, and enforcement efforts. On July 16 from 2 - 3:30 p.m., participants will have an opportunity to pose questions to the presenters regarding issues in their own workplace or community.

 

Virtual Disability Pride "Parade" July 26

Make a statement and join Easterseals for their virtual disability pride parade on the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act! To join, use the hashtag #VirtualDisabilityParade on July 26. Create a virtual 'sign' that shows your pride and share with them using the hashtag on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They will feature signs throughout the day!

Other ways you can participate under the #VirtualDisabilityParade hashtag:

  • share why you have disability pride

Lucas DD Adult Day Program Grants

The next cycle of the 2024 Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities Adult Day Grant application process ends on July 31

Funding is capped at $50,000 for each grant cycle, not to exceed $10,000 per award. Awarded funds will be distributed directly from the Lucas County DD ADA Grant Fund.

The goal of the grants is to help fund technologies and/or programs that expand and/or enhance Adult Day and/or Employment services, promote community integration and community employment, and/or helps people achieve their goals related to Adult Day/Employment services & supports. 

 

Disability EmpowHER Network Applications Open until Wednesday

Participants in EmpowHer Expressions learn about and practice important skills including perfecting elevator speeches, presenting to various stakeholders, interviewing, and negotiating while also covering disability specific topics. EmpowHer Expressions is an 8-week virtual program with regular assignments, 1-on-1 mentor meetings, and 90-minute class periods every Monday starting in October. Applicants should be ambitious, have an interest in improving their public speaking skills, and have at least one public speaking goal that they want to achieve! Click here to apply.

 

U.S. Department of Education Releases New Resources

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights released 3 new resources informing students with disabilities, and their families and schools, about relevant legal rights under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Section 504 prohibits discrimination against students with disabilities by institutions that accept federal financial assistance, which includes almost all public schools and public and private institutions of higher education.

 

OCALI's Free Lending Library

OCALI's Lending Library and the Outreach Center for Deafness and Blindness are excited to share that FM/DM devices are available to borrow for FREE! With more than 30 available to try, you can check out different models or try before you buy. These devices can provide greater access and support to your learners who are deaf/hard of hearing. Parents and guardians can talk to their child’s teacher or audiologist for access.

 

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

The Ohio Department of Aging partners with Area Agencies on Aging to offer the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Participants receive benefits to be redeemed for Ohio- grown fresh vegetables, fruits, cut herbs, and honey. You are eligible for the Ohio Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program if:

  • You are age 60 or older, and
  • You live in Ohio, and
  • You have a household income that falls within certain guidelines.

Even if you participated in the program last year, you have to complete a new application this year.

Roll Mobility App

Check out Roll Mobility, an app designed for wheelchair users and those with mobility issues. The team behind Roll Mobility is made of both disabled individuals and abled-bodied allies who share the vision of creating a more accessible world for people of all abilities. The app shares information about the accessibility of restaurants, public spaces, businesses, trails, and parking areas. Check out new, fun places with this app!

Board Vacancy at Preferred Properties

Preferred Properties, Inc. has a current vacancy on its 9-member Board of Directors. The not-for-profit focuses on creating housing opportunities through a variety of housing programs for persons with developmental disabilities. Its goal is to develop housing in such a way that persons living with disabilities are effectively integrated into communities and neighborhoods.
