Board Closed Wednesday for Juneteeth 

Lucas DD offices will be closed June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. Though our offices are closed, we are still here to support you. For emergency assistance, or to report a MUI, please contact the On-Call Service & Support Specialist at 419-380-5100.

 

Family Ties Game Night June 20

Want to have some fun while making connections with other families in the area? Then come to Family Ties from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. on June 20! There will be board games for all ages as well as light refreshments. Free event, no registration required! If you have any questions, reach out to familyties@lucasdd.org.

 

Board Meeting June 24

The next monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities will be on Monday, June 24 at 5:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public at Lucas DD's Larc Lane Training Center, 1155 Larc Lane (Entrance O) in Toledo.

 

Four Early Intervention Summer Playgroups left!

Lucas DD's Early Intervention team is pre-registering families for their inclusive Summer Playgroups, that take place from 10 a.m. to noon on:

 

Playgroups are ideal for those up to 6 years old, but ALL ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Parents are encouraged to connect as well. Register and check-in with staff upon arrival for a chance to win fun prizes!

 

Wealth & Wisdom June 26

This free class is presented by Lucas DD as part of our Wealth and Wisdom series. The topic at 6 p.m. on June 26 is SSDI and will be virtual only. Project STIR is coming to Toledo!

Project STIR is a training program for self-advocates designed to provide people with disabilities with the tools to advocate for themselves, work with others in advocacy and gain leadership experiences. This is a FREE training that takes place August 7 - 9 in the Toledo, Ohio area. Registrants must attend all 3 days. Supervision is not included; it is recommended that individuals attend with an ally. Registration required; space is limited. Once registration has closed, all details will be forwarded to the participants.

 

Lucas County Special Olympics Summer Football Camp Registration

LCSO is partnering with Ottawa Hills High School football team for two camps offered in July! The two dates are July 9 and July 11, from 5 - 7 p.m. at Ottawa Hills High School. You will be assigned to a day once registration has been filled. Click the headline to register. Registration is required as space is limited!

 

Special Olympics Sports Registration is Open

Lucas County Lightning Summer Sports registration is now open! If you want to play softball, cheer, or the walking group, this is your chance to sign up! Deadline to sign up for summer sports is next Friday, June 21 at 4:30 p.m.

 

Little Lightning Registration is Open

Lucas County Special Olympics Youth Program, Little Lightning, has opened registration for summer sports! Registration for youth programs is open now until June 28. You must register during this time to participate in the fun activities that are planned! If you have any questions or missed the newsletter, please reach out to littlelightning@luasdd.org.

 

Register for the 5th Annual LCSO Golf Scramble!

Grab your team and your golf clubs and get ready for some fun that directly benefits Lucas County Special Olympics! The 5th annual golf scramble is on July 27 (shot gun start at 8 a.m.). Business sponsorship opportunities are also available.

 

SALUTE Seeks Artists for Disability Pride Event in July

In conjunction with the SALUTE Storytellers event, SALUTE is looking for artists with disabilities who would like to display and tell stories about their art. This event will be on Saturday, July 13. Artists cannot sell their items on site but can provide their contact information if people are interested in purchasing later. Questions? Stay Connected with other Special Olympics Athletes

Special Olympics Ohio has partnered with We Thrive Together Ohio so that athletes can stay connected when they're not training or competing. Athletes are invited to participate in a wide range of free virtual events including games, workouts, life skills trainings, and social events. There is something for everyone! Disabled Women Make History (And Art) at TMA Tomorrow

Disabled Women Make History (And Art) is on Saturday, June 15 from 6 - 8 p.m. in The Toledo Museum of Art's GlasSalon in the Glass Pavilion at 2444 Monroe Street, Toledo, Ohio, 43620. Click here to register. Park & Play with DSAGT

Join the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo for Park & Play from 9 - 11 a.m. on Tuesdays during the summer! Locations vary. All ages and abilities are welcome! Please contact Lauren Stout at lauren@dsagt.org if you have questions. 

 

Practically Golf June 21-22

Join The Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio on June 21-22 for a competitive miniature golf fundraiser! There are 18 mini golf holes designed and custom built by area sponsors in the streets of Downtown Toledo outside of The Blarney Irish Pub Toledo. All proceeds go towards supporting community programs for people with epilepsy. Click here for full details.

 

Free Power Soccer Clinic June 22

The Ability Center is partnering with Riley Johnson and the United States Power Soccer Association in hosting a Power Soccer Clinic on June 22. This one-day event will be packed with fun, food, and friends. Washington Local Schools is generously hosting the clinic at The Fieldhouse at Whitmer High School. All players must play using a power chair, but do not need to be a power chair user. The Ability Center is happy to provide power chairs to those who need them. Must register.

 

Sensory-Friendly Morning June 22 at the NMGL

The National Museum of the Great Lakes (NMGL) offers an inclusive and serene environment for families and individuals with sensory sensitivities to explore and enjoy their exhibits during Sensory Friendly Mornings! During Sensory Friendly Mornings, visitors can expect: Limited crowds to ensure a peaceful visit, dim lighting for a calming ambiance, and reduced or eliminated exhibit sounds to minimize auditory stimulation. The next Sensory Friendly Morning is on June 22, from 9-10 a.m.

Lucas DD Adult Day Program Grants

The next cycle of the 2024 Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities Adult Day Grant application process ends on July 31

Funding is capped at $50,000 for each grant cycle, not to exceed $10,000 per award. Awarded funds will be distributed directly from the Lucas County DD ADA Grant Fund.

The goal of the grants is to help fund technologies and/or programs that expand and/or enhance Adult Day and/or Employment services, promote community integration and community employment, and/or helps people achieve their goals related to Adult Day/Employment services & supports. 

 

Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program

The Ohio Department of Aging partners with Area Agencies on Aging to offer the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Participants receive benefits to be redeemed for Ohio- grown fresh vegetables, fruits, cut herbs, and honey. You are eligible for the Ohio Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program if:

  • You are age 60 or older, and
  • You live in Ohio, and
  • You have a household income that falls within certain guidelines.

Even if you participated in the program last year, you have to complete a new application this year.

Pizza Fundraiser for Courageous Community Services 

CCS's self-led disability advocacy group, People First of Toledo, is raising funds for a one-day conference! Act now because the fundraiser is almost over! Get your Domino's pizza cards before June 16 (in 2 days from today!) to show your support for disabled self-advocates.

 

People First of Toledo is an advocacy group run by and for individuals with disabilities themselves. The conference will teach valuable skills and cover many relevant, important topics to the disabled community. For just $20, you can help make this dream a reality-- and enjoy some pizza, too!

 

Special Olympics Ohio needs volunteers for State Games

The 2024 Special Olympics Ohio State Summer Games will kick off June 28 at Ohio State University in Columbus. They have a tremendous need for volunteers to make this event amazing for the 2,500+ athletes competing. View opportunities and sign up here:
