Board Closed for Memorial Day Monday The Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities will be closed Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. Lucas DD is still here to support you. For emergency assistance, or to report a MUI, please contact the On-Call Service & Support Specialist at 419-380-5100. Early Intervention Summer Playgroups start June 5! Lucas DD's Early Intervention team is pre-registering families for their inclusive Summer Playgroups, which will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on five upcoming dates. The dates are June 5 at the Toledo Botanical Gardens, June 24 at the Zoo, July 10 at Side Cut Metropark, July 31 at Glass City Metropark, and August 12 at Sylvania Playland. Playgroups are ideal for those up to 6 years old, but ALL ages and abilities are welcome to attend. Those who pre-register and check-in with staff upon arrival will be entered to win fun prizes. Summer Rec Jam June 5 The summer rec jam is around the corner! Come out to Centennial Terrace from 7 - 9 p.m. on June 5. This fun night is FREE (concessions available for purchase). No registration required. We will see you there! SALUTE Meeting June 10 SALUTE is… A self-advocacy group for those served by the Lucas DD. The next meeting, held at 1155 Larc Lane (Door O), begins at 5:30 p.m. on June 10 and the guest speaker will be Lt. Gina Shubeta of the Toledo Fire and Rescue Department. She will speak about the Department and about her role. No registration required! |

Registration Open for DODD's FAC & DC Joint Meeting Family Advisory Council (FAC) and Disability Connect (DC) meetings take place regularly and are an opportunity for people with disabilities and family members to connect directly with the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. Presentations with valuable information and updates will be provided from different divisions and DODD leadership. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 12, participants will engage in activities to provide feedback and cultivate a community of connections. Space is limited! Lucas County Lightning Unified Golf League Registration is Open Lucas County Special Olympics is offering unified golf! Athletes golf 9 holes with a unified partner in an alternating shot format. All golfers must possess the basic skills to play a round of golf, including golf etiquette. SO staff will assign teams to two different courses. Weekly practices begin June 17; times and locations will be announced once registration closes on Monday. Do you know someone who is interested in being a unified partner? Spectrum Sailing Registration is Open Join Spectrum Sailing for a FREE 3-day sailing camp, June 11-13! 20 autistic children (ages 10-17 years old) will have the opportunity to attend and learn how to sail. These camps provide opportunities for skill development, social interaction, and confidence building. Sailors will learn knots, parts of the boat, why the boat sails, and most importantly, how to sail! Space is limited and registration is required. 10th Annual CommUNITY Film Fest Deadline is next Friday The deadline to submit your film to be featured in the CommUNITY Film Fest is fast approaching! Entry deadline is Friday, May 31. Movies can be up to 5 minutes long and most individuals shoot films on their phone or tablet. The 10th annual CommUNITY Film Fest is scheduled for Aug. 18 at the Maumee Indoor Theater! SALUTE Seeks Artists for Disability Pride Event in July In conjunction with the SALUTE Storytellers event, SALUTE is looking for artists with disabilities who would like to display their art and tell stories about their art. This event will be on Saturday, July 13. Artists will not be selling their items but can provide their contact information if people are interested in purchasing. Practically Golf is coming up Join The Epilepsy Center of Northwest Ohio on June 21-22 for a competitive miniature golf event fundraiser! There are 18 mini golf holes designed and custom built by area sponsors sharing their product or a local landmark. This 18-hole mini golf course will be setup in the streets of Downtown Toledo outside of The Blarney Irish Pub Toledo. All proceeds go towards supporting community programs for people with epilepsy including prescription assistance, Family Camp and Purple Day®. Click here for full details. |

Glass City TOPSoccer on Sunday Glass City TOPSoccer is an adaptive soccer program for athletes with special needs (all ages 5+). This is a FREE program, but registration is required. Better Toledo: OOD on June 6 Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) will facilitate an interactive workshop from 3 - 5 p.m. on June 6 to raise awareness of disability etiquette, proper language usage, and respectful interactions with people with disabilities; best practices for fostering a disability inclusive workplace culture; and tips for recruiting, hiring, and supporting employees with disabilities. This event is in partnership with The City of Toledo Human Relations Commission and is part of Better Toledo, a personal and professional development series to ensure “you will do better in Toledo.” Registration required. Celebrating Possibilities on June 6 Join Bittersweet for their 10th annual signature event, Celebrating Possibilities, which will happen on their campus from 6 - 9 p.m. on June 6. There will be food trucks, live music, a silent auction, and more! Wood County Board of DD Community Festival Don't miss out on an evening of pure FUN! Join Wood County Board of DD from 5 - 8 p.m. on June 7 for an evening packed with family fun on their campus! Enjoy an array of kid-friendly, inclusive activities, LIVE music, artisan vendors, and food trucks! This event is FREE and open to the public. Super Saturday Dance on June 8 The next Super Saturday Dance is June 8 from 7 - 9 p.m. This dance at Five Lakes Church is a time for individuals with disabilities and their caregivers to enjoy an evening of music, friends, and food. Whether you prefer to wear a tie, a dress, or your favorite jeans and T-shirt, all are welcome! Registration is recommended. Wood County Board of DD Football Clinic with BGSU All individuals ages 8 and up served by ANY Ohio Board of DD are invited to join current BGSU football players, coaches, and support staff for a fun afternoon learning all about football! Registration by June 9 required (event is June 18 from 3:30 - 5 p.m.). Click here to register. Sensory-Friendly Virtual Dinosaurs-Themed Program on June 11 Join The Henry Ford Museum virtually from 6 - 7:15 p.m. on June 11 as they present a free program designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorder or sensory processing disorder and their family members or caregivers. June's program is themed around dinosaurs. They will have a dinosaur-themed movement activity, story, and craft, as well as a presentation on "5 Dinosaur Families" by Ashley Hall, Outreach Program Manager at the Museum of the Rockies in Montana. Registration required. The program will be held virtually via Zoom and instructions to join as well as a visual schedule will be sent out to all registered participants before the program. |

2024 Inclusive Community and Specialty Programs List Have you been waiting for the Inclusive Community and Specialty Programs List? Well, it's here! Check out this 15-page document with various programs, there's sure to be something for everyone! Piper's Key: books for children with DD Piper's Key is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity that gifts inclusive books to children with disabilities that represent their unique selves in a positive light. For so many children with disabilities, the primary focus is on their actual diagnosis and treatment/management plan. Often times, these plans may not include positive self-image through representation. Piper's Key is unlocking representation through literacy for every child! TARTA Youth Summer Blast Pass application is open The Youth Summer Blast Pass is intended to help youth aged from 6-19 find independence and allow them to learn how to travel throughout the city. The YSBP is good for unlimited rides on TARTA services from June 1 - August 31 – including fixed route buses, TARTA Flex microtransit and TARPS paratransit – during the summer months. TARTA has both digital and physical passes available for use. ASK PROVIDER SUPPORT As a certified provider of DD services, navigating the system can be confusing and downright overwhelming at times. Join Lucas DD's Litter League Do you enjoy being part of a team? Do you enjoy having a clean city? Then consider joining Lucas DD's Litter League team! The Toledo Litter League is a community-wide, summer-long, litter cleanup and beautification initiative! It is a competitive baseball-themed litter abatement program aimed at striking out litter in Toledo and the rest of Lucas County. Each team is limited to 20 members who will meet periodically between June 1 and August 31 to pick up trash in the 43614 zip code. A waiver must be signed. All supplies provided! Help Celebrate Fathers Throughout Ohio Celebrate dads with DODD this June by participating in a video celebration of the dad or father figure in your life! Join people with disabilities and family members throughout Ohio in submitting a 15-to-30-second video of you sharing about the dad in your family. Videos can be recorded with your phone and included in a compilation video to be released in June. Feel free to use any form of communication (Speech, ASL, communication devices, etc.) and share information about your dad. Deadline is Friday, May 31. Special Olympics Ohio needs volunteers for State Games The 2024 State Summer Games presented by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center kicks off on Friday, June 28th, on the campus of The Ohio State University.
