2. The Ability Center and Toledo Lucas County Public Library collaborate on book project
The Ability Center and Toledo Lucas County Public Library have collaborated on DREAM, an inclusive book project. The aim of DREAM (Disability Representation, Education and Awareness in Media) is to ensure that books by, for and about people with disabilities are widely available.
Books on the DREAM list will contain stories that describe growing up with a disability, victories of the movement and social opportunities. The Toledo Lucas County Public Library will have copies of the books from the DREAM list in multiple formats at each branch location.
In addition, several classrooms in area schools will participate in a reading challenge using highly recommended children’s books from the DREAM list. During the second half of the school year, these participating classrooms will receive disability education, and each classroom teacher will receive a teacher toolkit with extension activities and calls to action. The goal of the DREAM school program is to foster inclusion and normalize disability.
