Friday Update:

1. Board of DD vacancies

The Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to fill several vacancies on its Board of Directors. Applicants shall be residents of Lucas County, citizens of the United States, interested and knowledgeable in the field of intellectual disabilities and other allied fields, and, to the maximum extent possible, have professional training and experience in business management, finance, law, health care practice, personnel administration, or government service. One appointment shall be to complete an unexpired term through December 31, 2021.

Two appointments will be to serve 4-year terms beginning January 1, 2021 through December 31, 2024. Interested applicants will need to complete an Application for Public Volunteer located on website www.co.lucas.oh.us and attach resume.

2. The Ability Center will host a webinar about our new assistive technology program

The webinar will be September 24 at 10:00. Click here to register.

3.  Voters forums scheduled on September 30 and October 1

Every year, Partners for Inclusion, the Toledo-Lucas County Disabilities Commission, the Board of DD, and the Ability Center sponsor forums using a town hall style format to discuss issues and candidates on the local ballot. This year they will be virtual discussions.

On September 30th the discussion will focus on the two countywide levies – Metroparks and Children Services — and the two income tax issues in Toledo. It will be Wednesday, September 30, from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. via Zoom and on Facebook.

On October 1, the candidates for County Commissioner, Probate Judge, and Sheriff have been invited to discuss their viewpoints on disabilities issues. Again this discussion will be on Zoom and Facebook.

4.  Center for Disability Empowerment to host accessible voting webinar

From 11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, September 22, the Center for Disability Empowerment (CDE) will host a free webinar via Zoom for voters with disabilities.  Registration is required. Click here for an informational flyer.

The program will help participants learn how to be informed voters and find reliable information on candidates and issues. The webinar will feature speakers from CDE, the Ohio League of Women Voters, and Disability Rights Ohio.

5.  Online sessions discuss why working benefits you

October 6 and 8 online sessions will answer some very important questions if you are working about keeping your SSI/SSDI and your health care benefits?   Click here for more information.

 

6.  Bittersweet Farms holding virtual auction

Bittersweet Farms is holding a virtual auction as part of the 6th Annual Celebrating Possibilities, a virtual event presented by Dana.  The auction includes:

  • Custom, original artwork by Bittersweet participants
  • A collectible Ohio State University helmet signed by Urban Meyer
  • Delights from the Bittersweet Gardens and Bittersweet Culinary programs

The Virtual Silent Auction will remain open from now until midnight on Friday, September 25th. Every bid supports the mission of positively impacting the lives of individuals with autism.

7.  FANS Network planning Goodwill drive

The FANS Network will hold a drive for donations to Goodwill on September 24.  Goodwill Industries will then provide vouchers for individuals being served by The Lucas County Board of Developmental Disabilities. The number of vouchers provided will be based on the number of bins filled on this day on behalf of FANS and the Lucas County Board of DD.  Click here for complete details.
